Senate Bill 367 provides for reauthorization of the Coastal Zone Management Program and would ensure that Georgia receives needed federal funds.

At the same time, Jekyll Island remains at the center of a controversial redevelopment proposal to build a new town center on the island with condos, hotels and shops on 64 acres of the 7.5 mile long barrier island.

While some renovations to Jekyll's infrastructure are necessary, there are still concerns about the environmental impact of the development on the fragile ecosystem.

Senate Bill 367 provides for reauthorization of the Coastal Zone Management Program.

Last week, Representative Debbie Buckner amended SB 367 to also include language to prohibit development on the beach 2,500 feet north of the convention center.

SB 367 will be heard next in the House Rules committee where the Jekyll protection language could be removed from the bill.
