Restore the Funds, Conserve Our Land

You can take action on this alert by reading the information below and following the directions at the bottom.

Issue

Conserving our lands and natural areas helps to clean our air and water, keep communities healthy and increase property values. The Georgia Land Conservation Program has helped successfully protect tens of thousands of acres across the state.

Background

The Georgia Land Conservation Program works to protect our lands for future generations. It was created in 2005 to offer funds to local governments and private landowners interested in permanently protecting their land. Some of the land protected is publicly owned, but some remains in the hands of private landowners. Last year, the Georgia General Assembly allocated $42.3 million for the Georgia Land Conservation Program.

The protected lands include some of the most magnificent parcels from the north Georgia mountains to the coastal plains.

Unfortunately, the House cut $25 million in funding for the Georgia Land Conservation Program from the FY09 budget.

We need your help to urge your Senator to restore the full $35 million in funding now.

Please support full funding for the Georgia Land Conservation Program

Dear Senator,

I am writing to urge you to restore the $25 million land conservation funds cut by the House for the Georgia Land Conservation Program.

The program has been a success. Thanks to the generosity of the Legislature, it has permanently protected tens of thousands of acres from the mountains to the coast at a fraction of what it would cost to purchase the land off the market.

Some of these lands transfer ownership to local or state government, but many parcels remain in private ownership on the tax rolls. All play an ecologically significant role in protecting our rivers and streams and providing wildlife habitat.

As one of your constituents, I urge you to appropriate the $35 million proposed by Governor Perdue for the Georgia Land Conservation Program.

Sincerely,

Your name and address here
