Tell your legislators to vote YES to clean school buses! Georgia kids deserve a clean ride to school.

You can take action on this alert by reading the information below and following the directions at the bottom.

Issue

Diesel exhaust, a toxic mixture of hazardous pollutants, can build up in the cabins of school buses, putting children at risk. This dangerous pollution can be reduced by as much as 85 percent by installing pollution filters.

Background

Only 1,000 school buses have been retrofit with pollution filters to date. Available federal funding is limited and requires a 20 percent match. Many school systems have been unreceptive to taking action to clean up their buses due to this requirement. The 2009 state budget is still being debated. We need an appropriation of a minimum of $1.3 million to provide the match for these federal funds. This appropriation would double the number of clean school buses in our state.

Vote YES to $1.3 million in the states 09 budget for school bus pollution filters!

Dear Representative,

I am contacting you today about my concern for diesel pollution on school buses.

Diesel pollution contributes to many adverse health impacts, particularly for children whose lungs are still developing. However, there are simple, cost-effective pollution filters that can reduce the emissions by 90%.

Federal funds are currently available to help pay for these filters but school systems are unable to participate due to the 20% match required.

The state needs to step-up and appropriate a minimum of $1.3 million to match the existing federal funds and double the number of clean school buses in our state.
