Keep the Chattooga Wild & Scenic

You can take action on this alert by reading the information below and following the directions at the bottom.

Issue

The Chattooga River, which runs through the northeastern part of the state, is Georgia's only federally designated Wild & Scenic river. The headwaters of the Chattooga are an ecologically sensitive area that meander through Ellicott Rock Wilderness.

Background

Because of the sensitivity of the area, the U.S. Forest Service has allowed the upper stretch of the Chattooga to be accessed for hiking, camping, hunting and world-class trout fishing, but has restricted boating for 30 years.

Now they are proposing to reverse that decision.

Big boating lobby groups are mounting a last minute national rally to pressure the U.S. Forest Service to provide unrestricted access to this fragile portion of the river. Boaters already have access to more than half the length of the Chattooga plus many tributaries. This bodes ill for keeping the Upper Chattooga protected in its pristine state for future generations.

Let the U.S. Forest Service know you support continuing to allow the Upper Chattooga to be protected and accessed through foot traffic only.

Keep the Upper Chattooga Wild & Scenic

Dear U.S. Forest Service,

I am writing because I want to keep seven miles of the Upper Chattooga River Wild & Scenic.

I urge the Forest Service to adopt Alternatives 2 or 3 to continue to allow foot traffic only on this part of the river - just as the Forest Service has for the last 30 years.

I oppose Alternatives 4 and 8, which would open the Upper Chattooga to various levels of boating.

Sincerely,

Your name and address here
