Your Immediate Help Needed to Support Energy Efficiency

You can take action on this alert by reading the information below and following the directions at the bottom.

Issue

Tell your legislators not to cut funding for a clean, efficient energy future.

Background

Last week, a proposal was introduced into budget negotiations that would eliminate all state funding for the Construction Codes and Industrialized Buildings Program in the Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA).

Eliminating state funds would wipe out DCA's Construction Codes section, which is responsible for administering Georgia's building codes - including model energy efficiency standards - as mandated by law. The safety, quality, and efficiency of Georgia's homes and commercial buildings will suffer if this proposal passes.

The proposal seeks to eliminate $218,821 in state funding. This could halt all the current efforts to adopt the latest building codes and the Georgia Green Building Code effective June 30.

The state has already received $82.5 million in State Energy Program funds from the Department of Energy that were intended, in part, to help Georgia adopt and implement the latest model energy codes, let your elected representatives know that you support full funding for ensuring the safety, quality, and energy efficiency of Georgia's homes and businesses.

Please Oppose Funding Cuts for Energy Efficiency Buildings

Dear Representative Atwood,

As you negotiate a final budget for the state of Georgia, please oppose any funding cuts to the Construction Codes and Industrialized Buildings Program in the Department of Community Affairs.

Such cuts will:

- Endanger the health and safety of Georgia's homes and businesses;
- Jeopardize the $82.5 million in Federal funds received on the condition that Georgia adopt and enforce updated building energy codes; and
- Undermine Governor Perdue's "Conserve Georgia" campaign by increasing the future energy consumption of the building sector.

Thank you.
